Flowers and little more

Well, the laundry is not quite under control yet, but I am making inroads. Between that, Nicco starting at his new school (so far so good) and Caterina starting to be looked after by a childminder (not so good, as she cries desperately when I leave her) I haven’t made so much as a scrap [...]

I am back!

Wow, what a trip. Gentle hills covered in tidy vineyards rose and fell in the embrace of a soft, cool mist in Burgundy. Each vine groaned under the weight of fat and green grapes, on the verge of turning purple and ripe.
Every now and again a turreted chateau soared over the landscape, a vigilant sentinel [...]

Scenes from Liguria

We spent the Bank Holiday weekend on the Ligurian Riviera, and what a visual treat it was. Spring is in full bloom, carpeting the hills in white and blue, and giving the air a vague hint of garlic (the white flowers being the blossoms of Allium triquetrum, or three-cornered garlic).

My top five sources of collage inspiration

Children’s cabinet cards, old books, Victorian trade cards, maps and old family letters are great sources of collage inspiration

The colours were dazzling—the vivid yellow of mimosa and gorse, the pale purple of topped lavender, the candid white of rock rose, against tall verdant grasses, deep [...]

Inspiration of the week: old wrought-iron bed header

I was up in the mountain at the weekend, making the bed, when it suddenly struck me. Our old wrought-iron bed header with its sinuous curves and slightly peeling paint, would make the perfect stencil for a background. I can’t believe I haven’t noticed it before. I have been staring at it for an entire [...]

Inspiration of the week: Victorian imagery

The best find of my snowy flea market trawl was a Victorian-style metal box.
When I was younger, I used to dismiss Victorian imagery as cloyingly sweet. Age has changed me. I find that now I respond a lot more to oh-so-pretty colours and pictures, and have grown tired of edgy and bold—in the same way [...]
