A question of style

Artysmama has a very interesting post about exploring your style through art journaling. It came at an apt time for me, because I was wondering about my own style, and trying to define it.  I am a writer by trade and find it very easy to define my writing style—it’s what I call pictorial, full of (what I like to think are) rich, evocative descriptions (and yes, I am aware other people may call it flowery and wordy, but I prefer pictorial).

But my art style? Much harder to pinpoint. One thing that defines me is that, unless I am doing a piece for a challenge or a swap with set rules, I use personal imagery in my work. But then so does Corey Moortgat, and our stuff doesn’t look alike at all. Of course, she is a much better artist than I am—a proper artist—but I’m not talking about quality here. I am talking about approach—about style.

I tend to gravitate towards late 19th century and early 20th century images of flowers and birds,  and towards muted colours, so I suppose that makes my work vintage and feminine.

And yet, I have done many pieces (such as this and this) which are neither, but still feel recognisably me. So what is my style?
