Scenes from Liguria

We spent the Bank Holiday weekend on the Ligurian Riviera, and what a visual treat it was. Spring is in full bloom, carpeting the hills in white and blue, and giving the air a vague hint of garlic (the white flowers being the blossoms of Allium triquetrum, or three-cornered garlic).

The sea is a thousand shades of blue and green, often streaked by the white of wind-filled sails. Mallard ducks glide in the waters at the foot of forbidding castles, which once were strongholds against ferocious Saracen pirates, but have now become luxurious villas.

I was even so lucky to stumble upon a art and crafts market by the sea, and couldn’t resist buying a handmade cotton dress for Caterina. Meanwhile, Nicco had a close encounter with a sawfish.
